Microsoft LifeCam Support Coming for Windows Vista

I've noticed a few discussions out in the community on how Microsoft’s great new LifeCams don’t quite work yet with Windows Vista.

Well, to find out for myself, I just bought the Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 this weekend.  I’m happy to say I am currently testing beta drivers for the LifeCams, to which Windows Vista Technical Beta testers also have access to (via Microsoft Connect).  No need to worry if you're not part of that program -- drivers are coming full-speed ahead for these neat new webcams which will work very well on Windows Vista.

PS I think that you guys are doing a great job with making more people able to connect to each other by text or video messaging.  My family lives in the UK and its great to be able to see them using MSN messenger with my logitech webcam.  My goal is to get my extended family using webcams soon, and every step forward you guys take in this area is welcome.

My only complaint is that I wish the cool stuff would come faster.

Its great that you guys have teamed up with a mobile phone company in France, and I cant wait for it to happen in 2007 in Britain too.

Infact my big problem with Instant messaging is that my generation in the UK sort of skipped the crase, being more of a email and cellphone generation.  It still interests be that my generation although in our late 20's use technology so differently to my younger sisters generation.

Just read this post from the Windows Vista Team Blog regarding Vista device drivers for Microsofts LifeCam range of web cams... "...drivers are coming full-speed ahead for these neat new webcams which will work very well on Windows Vista." I recently

Now only if the RoundTable was for consumers and Live Messenger or at least Office Communicator. But MS have kept it for server-side software.

Apparently the Windows Vista Upgrade Program runs from the 13th of October in the UK.

Just called up two Evesham stores in the UK, acccording to one employee says that most PCs come with the coupon now, another staff member said the program will start Thursday.

I guess that confirms that the program officially starts on the 26th of October.  But Evesham are running with it early under some conditions.

According to the lady I spoke to there will be a vista coupon in each box and you can then go online to place an order with some registration code.

She seemed to think that it only applied to MCE PCs that are vista ready in some form!

They didnt seem to knowledgeable, however if anyone else can get details call Evesham in the UK.

I can't afford to keep calling long distance, it seems like Im out of luck this time by a few days ... no vista coupon for me :-(

Just a note...Of course I live in the US, and so there is no guarantee that the program will be exactly the same in the US as in the UK!

Any word on driver support for the LifeCams?  It is going to keep us from deploying...

nick i will send all the regards for u from my friends... :) They are waiting for u to make a good driver:D

spyhero, I'm afraid I'm not clear on your statement, as I do not recall pledging to make Webcam drivers available (I definitely do not have control over who has/not access to them).  I think connect.microsoft.com is where you need to look or whom you need to contact for these.

Hey Daniel Bobke:  to my knowledge, the Lifecam drivers are only available via the Windows Vista Technical Beta Program and they are no longer taking new applicants for testing.  But, my hope is that soon they will be made public.  I'll let you know via the blog once this happens, as you're not the only one awaiting their release.

Just browsing to the MS Hardware Vista site and I am worried.  It is saying that software for Lifecam will only be available in January, and it is probably going to be beta.  Will we have some way to run our lifecam before that?  I have access to RTM via technet but half of my stuff aren't currently supported in one way or another.......

Hey marshall -- I understand that drivers for the Lifecams will be made available around retail availability of Windows Vista.

Than that's just plain bad......  Even the most complained logitech made a vista version driver for their webcams and is available now.....

Just bad.  And I now regret throwing my logitech cam away for the lifecam, hoping that it will have vista drivers first......

Ouch.....

I think this is incredibly embarrassing!

Does Microsoft think early adopters or business users do not need webcams?

Vista has released for businesses and through rtm almost a month ago, and i am not the only IT Pro who has switched most (in my case actually all!) productive systems to windows vista, except for a dual boot partition with xp on one machine.

I used a combination of the VX6000 and NX6000 to stay in touch with my wife and 2 year old son during extended business trips. The VX6000 attached at home to the living room PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition. The notebook running XP Pro. Now of course that I upgraded both the Media Center PC and the notebook to Windows Vista, I have not only two unusable expensive webcams, but also, which makes me even more angry, cannot communicate with my family.

Any other Vista enthusiasts sharing my frustration?

Hey habnix:  as I've said above, you can expect Lifecam drivers to be made available around Windows Vista's general retail availability date.

i have been using my lifecam 6000 for quite a while now. i had video right out of the box. the only issue i had was audio. i am running vista build 5600, and creative SB audigy card. i had to go into the sound settings where i found that the lifecam sound source was already listed as: (lifecamusb20). once i set that as the sound source i was able to use lifecam video and audio. sound quality was excellent.

Thanks for the info Nick. I have the full blown retail version of Vista (Ultimate) with a Gateway machine lots of memory and I have had no luck with the MS provided drivers/software and have even had tech support say there are no drivers (Have it in email even) for the VX6000? (Getting an error message that the syntax of the inf is invalid and driver will not install)

Certainly interesting that you seem to have it working for several months now.

Nick, may I ask if there are any plans to support the Live Vision Camera (for the Xbox 360) in the LifeCam software?

I have the Live Vision Camera and on Windows Vista it only appears to be functional on Live Messenger. It would be great if this camera was supported by LifeCam so we could use it to do other stuff too.

Kind Regards,

Parm

Hi Nick... you bet your sweet bippy I'm jealous. Can't wait to buy a new webcam that works with vista home premium.

P.S. I'm not quite the person I used to be (medical reasons) so I can't always make sense of things. But I still have the ability to work well with pc's and macs. Can someone please clarify for me: Is there now a webcam that will work with Windows Vista?

Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on my audio problem.  I successfully installed the software on my home PC (XP) and my daughter's (Vista - got the update from Microsoft).  My father doesn't have a webcam but installed WLM on his PC.  My sister installed a Logitech webcam on her laptop.  In all cases, we can share video (except obviously my father but he can view us) but no one can get the audio to work so we wind up having to type our conversations.

The audio mike works fine when tested but the other party can't hear us.  there must be something very basic that I'm missing.

Unrelated:  On my XP machine I was able to access a "dashboard" and make a short video.  On the VISTA machine, it's nowhere to be found.  In fact I can't find any program related to the LifeCam VX-2000.  Despite that, I can share my webcam with another party.

Could someone give me some guidance?
