Windows Mobile 6 Arrives

Microsoft at the 3GSM World Congress 2007 in Barcelona (one of my favorite cities) just announced Windows Mobile 6 for mobile devices.  You can get our PressPass announcement here.

Windows Mobile 6 is the latest update to our mobile software platform.  WM6 now provides updated mobile versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint that bring features previously only seen on PCs.  WM6 also introduces a richer email and calendar experience, including new one-click options for email and the new calendar bar for viewing appointments.  The release also ships with Windows Live for Mobile, bringing Windows Live's email, instant messaging, blogging and -- best of all -- web search, to your mobile device.

Check out some screenshots of WM6 over at The Hive.

With the release of Windows Vista just a few weeks ago, Windows Mobile 6 is designed to take full advantage of our newest operating system.  Managing your device and syncing photos, music, movies and Outlook information becomes easier than ever before with Windows Mobile Device Center.  Go here for more information on WMDC for Windows Vista.

Each release of WM6 is a further step in the right direction. But Microsoft need to snazz up the UI on WM a bit more and they also need to collaborate with a handset manfacturer a bit closer to compete with the upcoming iPhone and Samsung F700.

New release again...another innovation, wonder what options would be available for technical support on this...I've checked on my resources, couldnt find anything about this product yet...

When will we see WMDC syncing support for Windows Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

Great stuff!!! Windows Mobile 6 is a huge leap in the future. It's great to see Device Manufacturers and Carriers willing to provide OS Updates to popular devices (T-Mobile Dash, Palm Treo 750 and i'm sure there will be more to come!)

Check out the MOTO Q q9 handheld with 256MB of on-borad memory, a huge step in the right direction.

I have to second Bas' comment. Windows Mobile Device Centre is such a welcome application but for home users such as myself, the ability to synchronize with Windows Mail, Contacts and Calendar are a must.

What has been support for windows mobile has always been outlook, I wonder if they'll be able to make some changes and have windows mobile 6.0 accomodate windows mail...

Hi prodced,

Thanks for your comment.  A few questions for you:

1. Did you uninstall any previous versions of Windows Mobile Device Center and Windows Mobile Device Center driver update before installing the RTM version?  That is recommended.

2. Can you repro the failed connection error and send me the wmdc.log and wmdhost.log?  Here are the instructions on how to enable logging: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/wmdc/debug/index.htm

3. You can send me the logs at dcinput@microsoft.com.  In your mail, summarize your issue and mention that the logs files are for Jane Ly to view.

Thanks!

Jane

I recently bought a Cingular 8525 running Windows Mobile 5. I'd like to get it upgraded to WM 6.

Below is a link to the cingular users forum. Many cingular users are petitioning Cingular to allow them to upgrade their phones to WM 6.

Hey BillyB:  Not sure if you're aware, but we provide a kit to OEMs, from which they build the OSes for their devices.  Thus, it's the OEMs ultimately control what devices will get updates, and this decision is based on their respective business models.

I've had nothing but trouble trying to get WDMC 6 working on My 64-bit Vista Enterprise install with my Treo 750.  I think it may have vestiges of the beta of WDMC left on it, but if it's there I can't find it.  No matter what I do the best I can get out of it is "Access is denied" while it is attempting to add the "NMicrosoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter".  I've even tried ripping it using the right-click uninstall on the MSI file.  I hav eto wonder if it still has a reg entry somewhere that is referencing an old component from the beta.

Hi dstowers,

For 64bit users, you need to go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Windows Mobile Device Center and Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update.  Also, are you logged in with an Administrator account?

I recently upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista and now I'm trying to syncronize my Dell Axim x51 which has WM 2003 to Windows Mobile Device Center via bluetooth but WMDC does not recognize the device.  The computer recognizes that the device is connected and the PDA recognizes the connection to the PC also.  It even shows up under "Computer (my computer)" but WMDC still doesn't.  Is there a work around for this if WMDC does not support bluetooth connections?  Thanks

I just setup a new Sony laptop with Vista.  I am trying to sync my Verizon Treo 700w via bluetooth.  USB works great via Windows Mobile Device Center.

I have successfully paired by laptop to my treo...unfortunately the Activesync (yes activesync) service is not showing up as an option on my Treo....

Palm told me I have to get an activesync driver fro Windows Mobile Device Center from Sony....

Is this true?  They (Sony) don't seem to know what I am talking about.

Please help...I am almost there and can smell victory....

Hi Nick,

I can no longer sync my ipaq 4700 running WM5 using WMDC6.  This all worked fine with the Beta WMDC6.  I've tried every suggestion I've found on the net and no joy.  This is extremely frustrating. What in the world happened between the Beta and the current release?  Browsing the net suggests that others are having exactly the same problem.  Any suggestions for getting this working again?

Thanks, alann
