Using 4 Monitors with Windows Vista

Not long ago I stopped by a co-worker's office and caught sight of his set-up of four 24-inch Dell 2407 monitors, all connected to the same PC and all working together perfectly.  Needless to say, I was impressed:

dualmonitors

The four-monitor arrangement my co-worker was using was dual ATI x1900XTX video cards.  He also has a PC with NVIDIA cards running the same array of displays.  Pretty slick !

There is a lot of great hardware on the market today that can allow you to replicate this arrangement yourself -- all you need is a motherboard that supports two PCI-Express x-16 video cards.

For instance, AMD (ATI) has a solution called CrossFire™ that enables the use of dual video cards.  Take a look at AMD's CrossFire™ website, which includes information for implementing this display array on your own desktop.

Not to be outdone, NVIDIA also has a solution that puts 4 video cards to use on a PC called SLI™.  If you have a system running NVIDIA, get more information from SLI™ from their website.

You should note that many high-end video cards today are shipping with a dual-monitor option -- so while four monitors may be a bit of overkill, two might better suit you (and your wallet!).  The good news is that Windows Vista is designed to natively accommodate multiple-monitor scenarios; for example, you can configure Windows Sidebar to appear on any connected monitor without first requiring preliminary adjustments.

Nice setup, I remember reading somewhere that Bill Gates has a 3 monitor set up

http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/30/news/newsmakers/gates_howiwork_fortune/

I wonder if there is someone at Microsoft who uses more than 4 monitors??

I can actually see the logic of having more that one monitor in a work environment, and with LCDs smaller and more flexible than ever you can add a few monitors without sacraficing to much desk space.

Talking of desk space

I just realised how much desk space Im wasting at home with my 19" CRT and 27" Standard Def TV.  I never really realised how much space these things take up until the guy at sears tried to sell me a older 26" LCD HDTV for $350, and I was really, really tempted.  If it had a built in ATSC tuner I would have taken it, as I dont subscribe to cable I really need a ATSC tuner in my next TV.  But since ATSC is now mandated all newer HDTVs should have it by Black Friday which will be sweet :-)

I'd be very interested in knowing what tools your colleague uses to manage application windows across his multiple monitors. Does he use UltraMon, or something similar? I created such an application called slimKEYS (actually the slimSIZE plug-in is the one handling windows across monitors) and I need feedback from people using multiple monitors, about their needs or frustrations (if any) in that setup.

I've used dual monitors for years, primarily because it was so easy to leave my doc with all my standard help files up as I worked on the newsgroups.

I'll admit that now, that second monitor is now a TV that's usually running something through Media Center.

Yeah I noticed the one webcam.  Kinda looks lonely on the one monitor!

Is there some secret lab at Microsoft where multiple cameras are used to reconstruct faces etc using the image data from multiple cameras located at slightly different angles.

Kinda like this:

I guess multiple webcams wouldnt make us any more productive at work, still interesting though.

Very nice, but is that a cable i see coming from the mouse? *shock* isn't it a wireless desktop too?

And from an interior design point of view, I'd get a black mouse to match the monitors and keyboard ;)

No need, it's already been done:

The same technology as seen in oblivion :)

Nick has blogged over on the Windows Vista Team Blog about a fellow Microsoftie's setup using 4 monitors

I have been crying for games to support multiple monitors for years.

And im not talking about Matrox style spanning, i mean games designed to place chat/equipment/etc in secondary screens to free up the main screen for the game itself.

MechWarrior would be a great candidate, too bad it hasen't seen a breath of life since MWO was canned.

Pretty neat setup.

We have been supplying multi-monitor solutions to the CAD/CAM industry specifically since the late when we could run multiple PCI video cards on any XP.

Current Intel 975XBX series have three (3) PCI-E 16x style slots. 2 are wired 8x when they have video cards in them, the third will run at 4x with a video card plugged in iirc.

We have one neat setup that we put together recently: x1900xtx, x1900 XFire, running 1 24" LCD in the middle and 3 x 19" LCDs, one on each side of the 24 and one above it. The one above the 24" is mounted via a telescoping monitor mounting pole. Works very well.

Yet another new feature to vista! It must take ages to move the cursor from the the very left monitor to the very right one!

Multiple monitor support is not new to Vista. While Vista offers some improvements in this area, Windows has supported multiple monitors since Windows 98. With mouse acceleration, moving between the boundaries of a multi-monitor desktop can be comparable to the same operation on a single monitor.

Multiple monitor support is so much nicer on Vista as it utilizes the PCIe slots nicely. I have been running a triple 17" LCD setup for 4 months now on Ultimate RTM version with absolutely no problems. I run 2 - ATI X1600 Dual DVI cards and its sweet! 3840 x 1024 :)

Don't forget to mention that you will need to have videocards that all uses the SAME kind of driver.

A huge drawback for innovative companies such as MaxiVista which, ironically, cannot function like it should under Windows Vista.

Nice .. BUT think of all that power being consumed .. Those Dell 24" use as much as CRT's (100W), so you've got a monitor setup consuming as much power as a fully laden, maxed out PC. (Though I do love my Dell 2407, and would love another 3!)

Think of global warming .. for all those that believe the hype  .. :-)

Hey newscientist2000:  Not to steal their thunder, but you should pose this question to Major Nelson at http://www.majornelson.com/ :)

Well, support may be there, but it is limited and full of quirks.

For example, all Windows versions (specially Vista) seem to be very particular about where the primary display is positioned in relation to any other displays.

The ideal setup is where the primary sits to the upper left corner of all other monitors. Any other monitors should be to the right and/or below.

Deviate from this and odd things start happening.

Vista for example, the blurring is cool looking, however place the secondary monitor to the left of the primary and then tile a background(either a single or "individual" wallpapers will do).

Now take a look at the taskbar or sidebar blurred effect. Resize them if you need a better look. Move them to the secondary monitor and compare. The transparencies on each should be inverted. Resize them back and forth fast enought and you get to see the wallpaper behind (belonging to the opposite monitor). It seems that the shader created for the blur effect needs some small rework.

I've seen this behaviour in different computers with both ATI and Nvidia chipsets.

It's unbeliveable! I've used 2 monitors with one PC but it didn't work very good. 4 monitor with one PC is a new way in the development world!
