Announcing the next generation in Windows Live apps & services

Today the Windows Live team announces the final release of the Windows Live suite of applications and web services designed to enhance the Windows user experience.  Consumers can now download the full Windows Live suite at once or pick and choose their favorite apps and services.

Why Windows Live on this blog?  Simply put, the two product platforms are now linked more than ever before.  Windows Live includes the Windows name because, ultimately, it is designed to take the Windows computing experience one step further.  The power of the PC is now combined with the flexibility and pervasiveness of Windows Live online services.  For example, the Windows Live Photo Gallery client app for Windows Vista now includes panoramic photo stitch and the ability to publish to Flickr.

This release comprises these Windows Live Applications:

  • Windows Live Messenger 8.5
  • Windows Live Mail
  • Windows Live Writer
  • Windows Live Photo Gallery
  • Windows Live OneCare Family Safety

...and these Windows Live Services:

  • Windows Live Spaces
  • Windows Live Events
  • Windows Live Hotmail
  • Windows Live for Windows Mobile (client-based or browser-based access to Windows Live from a Windows Mobile-based device)

To install the final versions of the Windows Live suite of applications, go here to access the Windows Live installer, which will let you pick and choose among the available applications.  New in this release is installer support for 64-bit PCs.

If you choose not to install all of the Windows Live applications at once, you can re-launch the Windows Live installer to install any of the remaining Windows Live applications whenever you wish.

Going forward, we'll be covering more of how the new Windows Live applications enhance the Windows Vista user experience both here and on the Windows Experience Blog.  Expect us to dive deep into each specific Windows Live application.

Meantime, be sure to check out the Q&A over with Chris Jones, Corporate Vice President of Windows Live Experience Program Management, where Chris details what makes today's release a compelling one for consumer users, developers and advertisers alike.

Let the confusion begin!

First, I have to say that the new Windows Live website looks very good and the videos are very well done! But why in hell didn't the designers know how to create Gif images without "dithering"?! I saw this on a lot of Microsoft sites and sorry this is really not professional: who uses Gif images in the 21st century?

And does the Windows Live software work with Windows XP? Can't find system requirements on that site.

All Kudos for designing the multi installer, but the thing isn't working for me on my corporate network, its timing out as the firewall needs to inspect all the exe before installation.  Cant you just release, single installers for each product, not the klutz multi installer which isn't working,  GAH.  All I want is Writer !

Hey scottelsdon:  you can get Writer itself here:  http://get.live.com/writer/overview.

Hey tino:  these apps and services do indeed work on Windows XP SP2 in addition to Windows Vista; check out the systems requirements for Messenger, for example:  http://get.live.com/messenger/sysreq.

Installed the moment it was released !

Kudos to the Live team for releasing the Live Suite :)

I only have one concern - why doesnt the installer have the options to install live products on a *custom location* ? Whats the mystery behind it to be placed in Windows folder ? It would be worth putting down the reason here in this blog :)

Regards,

Chakkaradeep

Finally usable on Vista x64 too, thanks! One thing I'd have wished for is a bit more integration into Aero... Windows Live Messenger looks terribly (!) out of place on a Vista desktop.

Are the features in Windows Live Photo Gallery going to be added to Vista Photo Gallery?

Posted by chakkaradeep

kwdaves, Windows Live Photo Gallery will replace Vista Photo Gallery in your machine when you check for updates or install it separately

Posted by kwdaves

No updates were available when I checked so I went ahead and downloaded the Windows Live version. Thanks.

On another matter, it turns out that both Photo Gallery and the old Digital Image Pro write captions to the "Title" metadata field, while other apps, including Lightroom, Photoshop Elements 5, and Picasa, write them to what shows up as the "Subject" field in Vista image properties and the "Description" field in Photo Info. I have gotten some flak for recommending Photo Gallery to an old Digital Image Pro user on the Adobe Lightroom forum because of that.

BUG in Windows Live Messenger 8.5 final:

when the application is closed, the icon remains in the system tray.

Posted by chakkaradeep

kwdaves, have you chosen to receive updates from Windows and Other products in your update settings ? Unless you set the update manager to receive updates of other Windows products too, you wont receive an update for photo gallery :)

Posted by chakkaradeep

BillD, the icon doens't remain here for me...

Have you opened Windows Live Mail (mail.live.com in IE) in your browser and closed Messenger ? The Windows Live Mail tries to auto sign in Messenger and if you haven't set the Messenger to sign in automatically, you would see the icon in the system tray until you close your Windows Live Mail (mail.live.com in IE)

The icon for Messenger is in the system tray until you hover the mouse over it. This bug is in every version of Windows Live Messenger on Vista.

Yes, I have the automatic update enabled for all my MS products. Moreover, if I check for updates from Vista Photo Gallery Option, it tells me I have the most recent version installed.

Sorry guys, but Windows Live is not working well. If you go to Live Spaces and try to go to your friend's Live blog it shows a window telling you that the page you are looking for does not exist!! Few hours later the same page is working ok. So, there is a big problem around to solve ASAP. 3 months trying to live with this Live thing!!

I tested out Windows Live Mail in an XP virtual machine first and I like that it finally has Eudora/MS Word style spellchecking that underlines misspelled words with a red squiggle so I decided to install it "for real" in Vista and after installing it all I get is "please wait while windows configures windows live mail" then all my desktop icons refresh and nothing happens. It doesn't work at all.

ok, ive got a question, ive just gotten Windows Vista, however i am unable to access pages such as Hotmail, bebo, certain pages on ebay etc. just wondering if theres any help manuals out there that could help me out!

Windows Live Photo Gallery is no good. It doesn't come up to Microsoft standards. Full screen mode actually changes the physical screen resolution! Incredible! Ridiculous! And the images are not actually scaled to be full screen. Even WMP is much better as an image viewer.

Will there ever come a time when Microsoft finally decides to abandon the name HOTMAIL and simply go with windowslivemail?

Posted by ambar1

Hi! I've installed WLM (Desktop). I only see this pop-up "please wait while windows configures windows live mail", it closes after a while... and... nothing happens! WLM won't start!... I have installed Vista 32bits.

Please if you know how to resolve this... tell me... thank you.

Where can I find the offline Windows Live installer? Also, where can I find the stand-alone installer for Photo Gallery? I never understood the online installation method. It just adds more work for me to find the offline version. I want the install files available to me for installation elsewhere.

I heard the good news about the release. x64 support super!

But I was disappointed. There is STILL no x64 support for Family Safety. x64 users still have kids......

I realise the family safety component is probably the most intrusive, but it has been a year since Vista was released, and I had the impression x64 would at least be treated equally by Microsoft.

So what IS the future of x64? Why isn't it treated equally by MS?

How can I check my hotmail account using windows vista.  My new Laptop won't let me load msn websites, including my hotmail account!

Confused.

Why didnt windows live just update the existing applications, I know have the original vista version and the live version of photo gallery, mail and messenger. I dont realy want two of everything on my computer especially when the original vista versions have no uninstaller.

Bad new for me. I haven't a high-speed internet conncetion, and I think it's causing my problem. After having run the unified Windows Live Installer, and after the download begins, it STOPS at 99%. Any ideas?

Posted by RockLobster

I dont have a high speed connection either, the installer quit before the end 3 times. In the end I used a download manager but it didnt update the existing apps it installed new ones so now I have two of them. Why does microsoft insist on providing installers for everything a simple .exe file to download and run is all it takes, these damn installers have a habit of screwing up. Yahoo messenger is another one that does this its so frustrating.

Posted by SamCPP

Same problem here. We use WLM for messaging in our office and several PCs continually fail on the install process. Stalling at 99% has happened a few times. Why a resume process for installs can't be done in this day and age seems ridiculous to me. It is such a basic thing to do.

There needs to be an offline installation... we shouldn't need to download the application 20 times for 20 PCs on the same network.

Yes, it stops at %99 when downloading Messenger. I am really mad. I really want to get on MSN but I cant. Any1 fix this? I turned off my firewall. And I only have Dial-Up

Posted by anjanesh

Same here. Had to format my hard-drive and reinstall everything. When it came to WLinstaller.exe - everything was smooth until it reached 99% after which it was stuck there for abt 20mins & then said it failed to install.
