Announcing Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC)

Posted by Nick White on Wednesday, December 05, 2007 11:06 AM 73 Comments

Today we're making available the release candidate (RC) of Windows Vista SP1 via Microsoft Connect, and tomorrow subscribers to TechNet and MDSN will have access to those RC bits too.  In addition, the RC will be available to the public next week via Microsoft's Download Center. The release candidate phase of beta software is typically the final phase before the RTM (release-to-manufacturing) of a product and indicates that the code has attained a significant level of performance and stability.

Let me call out several changes made since the Beta release of Service Pack 1 -- many of which came about as a result of direct feedback from our Beta-testing community (thank you!):

  • The size of the standalone installers have decreased significantly. For example, the standalone installer packages consisting of all 36 languages (x86 and x64 chip architectures) are smaller by over 50%. The standalone installer packages consisting of just the 5 languages (again, x86 and x64) slated for initial release are more than 30% smaller in size.
  • The required amount of disc space for SP1 installation has also decreased significantly. Furthermore, with the RC, if more space is required to install SP1, an error message will now display exactly how much space is needed to complete the installation.
  • Previous SP1 versions left behind a directory of files that wasn't needed after installation and occupied about 1GB of space; the RC includes automatic disk clean-up to remove this directory.
  • Installation reliability has been improved based on bug reports and error codes reported from Windows Update (thanks, Beta testers!). Testing shows that these improvements have significantly increased the proportion of successful installations of the RC.
  • We've improved the user experience of installing SP1 via Windows Update. During the Beta release, users installed without much guidance from Windows Update. The RC now contains a series of screens with detailed information on SP1.

We also have information to share with IT professionals and system administrators regarding final plans for SP1:  we're on track to complete and release SP1 in the first quarter of 2008.  When SP1 is complete and we reach our release to manufacturing (RTM) milestone, then shortly after the standalone installer will be released to the Web in two waves.  The first wave will consist of the standalone installer (x86 and x64) for the 5 initial languages -- English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese.  These languages will be deployed shortly after the RTM milestone.  The second wave will launch 8-12 weeks after the first and will consist of all remaining languages, for both chip architectures (x86 and x64).

For administrators managing Windows Vista PCs configured to use Windows Update but not wishing to deploy SP1 upon its release, we have a "blocker patch" that will prevent installation of SP1.  Information on the blocker patch can be found here starting tomorrow: http://technet.microsoft.com/windowsvista/bb927794.

If you're not familiar with SP1, you can find more information in this whitepaper.  We built Windows Vista SP1 to address specific reliability and performance issues and also to support new types of hardware and several emerging standards.  Further, SP1 is designed to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista.  Of course, those of you familiar with SP1 already know that some of SP1's improvements are already available via Windows Update.

A reminder to anyone installing the SP1 RC bits: you will need to uninstall the release candidate of SP1 before you can install a later version.

Also, Windows Server 2008 RC1 was made available today for testing; find the download here: http://www.microsoft.com/ws08eval.  And, we announced two updates to the WGA program yesterday:  the first addresses two exploits to the activation process while the second adjusts how Windows differentiates between the genuine and non-genuine Windows Vista experience.  More information can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2007/dec07/12-03wga.mspx.

And last, thanks once more to our Beta testing team for their diligence and devotion, as you've made a big impact on this RC release!

Hurray!...I get up early morning (NZ) and find two BIG releases!...cool...Congrats Nick!

Vista SP1 beta/RC Preview via Windows Update has been the BEST way to get SP1 installed and has never failed for me! We beta testers got good success via WU ;)

Just one suggestion - It would be nice to see the next final release of SP1 updating itself from RC to RTM or atleast put the intelligence to the installer to un-install the previous RC release (well, RC is more than enough to support :D ) and install the final SP1. Just a suggestion so that it eases the testing activity and more people would install it.

Argh!  I thought this week's release was supposed to be made publicly available.  Now I have to wait until next week.  Probably a good thing, since I sit for the CISM this Saturday anyway, and don't need the distraction of playing around with new software ;)

1. Please please please please please give free SP1 integrated Vista DVDs including free shipping to licensed users who have Gold RTM. Since only XP, 2000 and Server 2003 allow slipstreaming, MS should actually find a way out of this in the future.

2. Is there any way to make SP1 NOT backup files into the %Windir%\WinSxS folder before installing? The WinSxS folder on Vista seems to get bigger and bigger with every update installed. In XP, there was a parameter "/nobackup" users could pass to the update installer (update.exe) to not make it backup files. This way the Service Pack could not be uninstalled, however it saved a lot of disk space.

One question, will the public RC next week only work on English versions of Vista? I was hoping to install it on my two Danish Vista Ultimate installs as I thought the whole point of Vista is that it is language independant. Will this work? (I'l gladly accept some texts in English)

When will issues such as peripherals no longer working in Vista be addressed?  My company has a ton of HP ScanJet 5300C devices that currently do not work with Vista.  I'm not sure why that is, but I hate to think of the expense of replacing about 500 scanners.

I hope that RC1 fixes a minor bug that I have with Vista. Under Windows XP, I have the option to hide updates ie I don't want to see this update. Under Vista, I can't do this.

My problems is that Vista wants to update a printer drive and a manual review of that driver shows that I have the latest driver.

Have you tried running the HP scanner setup using compatibility mode for XP SP2?  That worked for my HP Scanjet 3400C, although the front buttons don't work anymore the Scanner works from if the functions are executed from inside Windows.

Of course you have a slightly different model to mine, your model is a 5300C, then you could try the advice here:

Nick, pls pls pls pls pls pls pls bring back the "Ask me what to do" option everywhere in the Power Options. Too many users are hitting the power button or sometimes our kids hit the hardware power button on the case and bam! the computer shuts down. This is a very minor change/usability issue which can surely be added before SP1 RTM/RTW. See http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=Power+options+Vista+%22Ask+me%22&src=IE-SearchBox and look how many users are wanting the option back.

And the "Safely remove hardware" balloon was much more intuitive than the dialog box where the user has to perform an extra click to get rid of it. See http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/hall-of-shame/safely-remove-hardware-gets-a-facelift-almost for more if you aren't aware of this irritating design change.

...and how many of them will use possibility of downgrading it to XP ?

I have to say, I've installed SP1 on:

1)  A Dell XPS170 laptop - Vista Business

2)  Two custom built desktops, one Business one Ultimate.

All are part of either my home domain or my work domain, and the network performance has indeed improved significantly!  I installed via WU rather than the standalone installer, and all three installs have gone flawlessly, though the laptop, which has by far the oldest technology, took darn close to 2 hours to complete.  The other two installs took perhaps 30 minutes each, actually, probably closer to 25 minutes and 40 minutes, respectively.

So far, so good.  I liked Vista before, but the improvements it has made on the networking side, specially on the laptop, make it much easier to use.

Posted by alkolkin

It is subjectively much faster and more reliable from my perspective.  Good work.

However, the sleep function still does not allow you to restart with Nvidia graphics adapter.  They blame Microsoft.

I am looking forward to Office SP1 and hopefully it too will become more reliable.  Outlook connecting to a remote server is really slow initially and often fails.

Posted by nwoolls

Installed the RC and looks good so far. How do we give official feedback? Should we use the beta reporting tool? I still see the artifacts in the volume mixer that have been there since RTM. Seems like a high visibility problem to still be visible after SP1 :(

Hey Nick, the "Connect To" item on the new Vista Start menu does not expand, also the Printer item does not expand. Can 2 options to whether to expand them or no as a submenu be added to "Start menu & Taskbar properties"? It is vital that "Connect To" is expandable because many Vista users are complaining about managing network connections.
