WSUS Admins, Happy New Year!! I wanted to provide some guidance on the prerequisite update (KB935509)

These prerequisites are only for Windows Update users right? The full downloadable version won't require these right?

Hi all, Just dropping a quick line to let you know about one of the updates we're releasing this week

For those of us who already have SP1 installed, how are we affected with these new updates being a prerequisite for Windows Vista SP1?

Windows Update installed this KB935509 on my Vista Home Premium.

So this patch is for everybody.

Hey BillD:  we noticed earlier today that in a small number of cases, this update was offered for installation on all Windows Vista editions instead of for Ultimate and Enterprise only, so we adjusted the logic to redefine that behavior.  Systems with Windows Update set to download and install updates automatically will not install it even if it has already downloaded, so ultimately, most people will not be affected.  If you happen to already have installed the update on your system it will have no negative impact.  It was designed to install on all versions of Windows Vista but is not required on any other version for SP1.

i ricived This update in WIndows Update , and i have home premium , in reboot my PC block, i push reset and now it s OK

Do any of the updates affect the way that Internet Explorer handles cookies?  I ask as I administer a site that uses cookies and have been hit with a salvo of support calls from Vista users since the release of the updates.

Since the latest security updates, all vista clients that connect to our website are not storing cookies.

The site also uses activeX controls and these are failing to install onto the vista clients even though the site is a Trusted Site, protected mode has been disabled and all relevant activex settings have been enabled . XP and other windows clients work fine i.e. also using I.E.7

Any Ideas?

Hey someone:  correct, the full version of SP1 once released will include all prerequisite files with it.

Hey Christopher Lively:  you have a Beta version of SP1 installed and these files pertain to the RTM version, so they're still necessary.  See my previous comment for more detail.

I have tried installing kb935509 many times on my vista ultimate 32 bit with firewall & anti virus turned off. I get a fatal error right after the *configuring update* screen every time and then it just keeps rebooting and crashing. Even crashes in safe mode.

Hey sararocs:  an update that fails to install could have many underlying causes, but in the end, such a problem may be an indicator of a more serious issue.  You should contact Customer Support at http://support.microsoft.com and use the 'chat' or 'email' links to try to resolve this issue.  Unfortunately, this blog is not equipped to provide technical support.  Good luck!

I just (an hour or so ago) had update KB935509 installed per very insistent suggestion of my machine (running Vista Ultimate). After all, I thought I'd be a compliant MS customer and have automatic updates done: why not?

My box is a brand-new (well, it's really ~6 months old) Fujitsu N6460 notebook with a 64 bit dual-core Intel processor and 4GB of ram. This would be an awfully expensive paperweight, so I have a real incentive to avoid further problems regarding these automatic updates.

I'm not running anything fancier than Vista, Norton Internet Security, MS Office.

Next thing I know, I can't start windows normally and I get to go through some process to roll things back. I'm actually relatively thankful that this was done without me having to know anything, because I sure don't. However, I'd really rather not have mandated updates make my machine unusable, either!

According to my event viewer, the relevant

error ID is 0x80242016. I'll note that about 15 updates have been done, since last October, all without incident.

I don't want to be a pest, but WTF?

Of course, my machine is now suggesting

once again that this update be installed.

... do I feel lucky? Should I?

KB935509 failed to install several times.

I have two harddisks. Disk A I have Vista, Suse 6.3 Linux and Grub-bootloader. This is my normal boot-disk and startup configuration. I have drive B where is XP and Vista own bootloader for XP-Vista (Vista is still on disk A) selection. Today I boot from drive B and KB935509 installed without problems.

I select drive A again to my boot-disk and Vista started well. Good, but I wonder what happens to SP1-installation when available. Maybe KB935509 makes something to bootloader and that modification is now on wrong disk.

One of the three prerequisites for the Vista SP1 upgrade is available now. According to the Vista team blog, KB935509, the first of these, "modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker

Hi: none of the 5 updates released on Jan 8th are installing. My thinkpad T61p on Vista32 business reboots constantly, tries to update then shuts down, then restarts and shows failed updates. Every day it tries again and this is driving me nuts. All updates have installed without any problem to date, so I think this block of updates have a bug in the install process. Am I the only one impacted by the problem?

Sorry if this is not the place but I am so frustrated with this OS that I got to a point that I have to complain with someone that actually worked on it. Nothing works. And when it does it is very slow.

But the funny thing is that you write: "we’re first and foremost focused on delivering a high-quality release, so we'll determine the exact release date of SP1 after we have reached that quality bar.". Nick, let me tell you a secret. ANYTHING you release at this point will be better than what you have.

I wonder how billg is handling that? I would be cutting heads like crazy.

My next computer will be a Mac... There is no way I will upgrade from XP to Vista. By the way, love XP with SP2 and Office 2007. Maybe you should put the people from Office to work fixing Vista.

Hey, is there an official place to report Vista bugs?

Vista's Explorer doesn't .cur files correctly in its thumbnail display, even the ones shipped with Vista.  For example, in C:\Windows\Cursors look at "cross_r.cur" or "arrow_i.cur", it's rendering a random stock Vista cursor image instead.   Property page preview is also wrong, although the mask loads fine. Load them in Visual Studio to see what the image is suposed to be.  

It's very bizzare.. something a developer only would notice.  It's killing me since I work in UI and the display is wrong for all of our cursor.

Anyways, I've love to log the bug through "Connect" but Vista is not there.

With the last Vista update, my Windows Mail contacts started having problems.  I can no longer edit any of the contacts.  If I click on a contact name, a box flashes up for a fraction of a second and then nothing.

I have posted this question to Microsoft's newsgroups but all I get is comments stating that my idea is stupid and of no use. However, I think it would help many people overcome restore problems. Many people delete all prior restore points for the purpose of increasing disk space. This eliminates all restore points until a manual one is made or one is made automatically. With no restore points the only way to sometimes successfully correct problems is to do a reinstall. Why not give people the option of selecting a specific restore point and then deleting all restore points prior to that one instead of deleting all of them? They could then save the latest four, five, six, etc, etc restore points in the event of an emergency recovery. If you think this ideal is stupid please let me know and I won't bring the subject up again. Thank you for your time.

Will hunt in the suggested forums. This is definitely a major pain if SP1 is dependent on this.
