Automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1 begins today

Posted by Chris Flores on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 11:55 AM 66 Comments
We're excited about the progress we've made with Windows Vista Service Pack 1.  On March 18th, Windows Vista SP1 was made available for customers who chose to manually download and install it from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.  Last week, we made the remaining languages available - giving WU users the ability to download and install Windows Vista Service Pack in any of 36 supported languages.  Today, we're happy to announce that we are beginning automatic distribution of SP1 in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

So what does this mean? Over the next few months Microsoft will automatically distribute Windows Vista SP1 to PCs that have automatic updates turned on (Learn how to turn on automatic updating) and running English, French, German, Spanish, or Japanese via Windows Update. Automatic distribution will only occur, according to user settings, on PCs ready for SP1. After Windows Vista SP1 downloads, WU will let you know that "new updates are available." You'll then be asked to make a few clicks before the installation of SP1 will begin.

While we're beginning automatic distribution today, you might not see it right away since the distribution process is very gradual.  As I called out on April 7th, we'll be distributing the service pack slowly so that we can help Windows users have a good experience.

As I posted above, we made the remaining languages of SP1 available for manual install on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update last week.  We'd like to let those of you running one of those languages that we'll plan to start automatic distribution of those languages sometime in mid-May.

We hope you enjoy the many improvements that have been made in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and are excited to start automatic distribution so more of you can begin experiencing the benefits.

Do you know what really gets my goat about this microsoft SP?  It's the EULA.  Don't get me wrong, I like microsoft products, they're polished and user friendly.  But to give me a service pack (essential to stay up to date) and then have the audacity to tell me what I can or cannot connect to it!  It made me FURIOUS (hence the caps).  Now listen, you don't own my hardware, you don't own what I connect to it.  As far as I'm concerned an operating system is exactly that - flawlessly interfacing with the hardware and network envirnment.  What am I going to deal with next - plugging in a non-windows printer will invalidate your license???

I'd really like another checkbox added.  "I agree to the terms", and "I agree under duress because I have to".

I've never used pirated software and don't agree with those that do.  I support good software companies by actually buying the product.  I don't expect to have this kind of thing shoved down my throat in future.  Thanks.

Thanks for posting.  I have today been to Vista Support and Dell Support trying to be sure that I have not missed the automatic download because of driver issues.  This post means that I can have patience.  Vista has been great for me.

I have to say, it's amazing to me that Microsoft has not provided a tool to pinpoint any possible drivers problems.  Obviously Windows Update knwos when there ARE problems, so why not a) say which driver(s) are the problem, b) point to an updated driver.

While I might be able to figure it out, I challenge John Q. Public to do so.

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

Iria, for folks who have one of the problematic drivers - SP1 simply does not show up for them. John Q. Public usually installs updates when they are available and most likely won't know we're blocking SP1 for one of their drivers we've flagged as problematic.

To me, when you say "John Q. Public" this is people like my mom or my grandfather etc. My mom certainly doesn't know anything about SP1 and won't install it onto her PC until its available for her.

Eventually new drivers will be provided, come down Windows Update and John Q. Public will install them and install SP1.

Let's assume you're correct on that.  Let's talk about people like me.  Do you know how many hoops I had to just through to find a driver for my M1710 laptop?  I still haven't gotten a response from Dell for my XPS Gen 2.

Why should I have to check the version numbers of driver files (which is what I did) to figure out which one is the offending culprit.  While I was able to do it, it seems to me that a program could easily be written to check for the offending files and at least point them out, so users don't have to go through Windows Explorer and check version info.

Additionally, once you figure out the file, it ain't easy to get the OEM to provide an update, esp. for laptops.

I would posit that since Microsoft was aware of these issues, they should have had "generic" driver updates available via Windows Update when SP1 was available.

Am I to understand that if SP1 hasn't shown up as an available update when I try to actively update, then it also won't ever auto-update for me? If that is the case, it would be much, much more intuitive if instead of Vista/WU pretending SP1 doesn't exist to a user's world, there was some kind of notice to the user about this? I'm trying to look at this from the perspective of John Q who doesn't know what SP1 even is but just knows his PC is set up to autoupdate. If the OS doesn't communicate an update issue to the user, and the user expects updates to happen automatically, how is the user supposed to get an updated OS?

BTW: I'm one of those who had Realtek issues, but even after verifying every item in that check list doesn't apply to my machine, I still don't have the SP showing up and frankly have no idea how it's ever going to end up on my machine (I'm even contemplating moving over to a Windows 7 CTP when it shows up on MSDN since at least it'll be progress). (I did call tech support but got tired of the hold time)

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

rkpatrick, the blockers in place to prevent SP1 from installing on PCs with problematic drivers is only a temporary block. Eventually updated drivers will be provided that will then let users install SP1 through Windows Update. So to say it won't ever auto-update for you isn't true.

Iria, I understand exactly how you feel and the "hoops" you had to jump through - as I've done them myself. Microsoft is working with OEM's to provide updated device drivers that will come across through Windows Update and then let you install SP1.

Brandon: My drivers are all up-to-date. I did cross-ref my machine with the KB list. I think the only step I have left is to call tech support (once I get the patience back to sit through the hold time). But my point is that let's say someone has auto-update turned on (like me), has correctly-versioned drivers (like me), etc. but SP1 is not available. Is there some point - let's say a year from now - where Vista would alert or in some other active fashion communicate to the user that crucial updates have been disabled for them for a year and is thus holding up other updates? Or at some point, will you deactivate the "Hide SP1 from certain machines" feature one day?

Posted by Joe Hendrix

I agree with rkpatrick and Iria.  I don't mind waiting for Windows Update to let me know that it's now available for my machine, but how long should I wait until I start getting concerned that the update has past me by?  A month?  3 months?

BTW... I'm one of the "victims" of out of date SigmaTel drivers.  Or, should I say, that is the only issue that I am aware of.

I had installed the RC release SP1 and it runs fine and you told me to uninstall in order to reinstall the final SP1 which I was going to do but the RC does not show up in the add/remove programs anywhere has anyone else ran into this problem?

I sure agree with Iria that if I have a driver that Vista marks as a problem it should tell me. As far as I know all my drivers are up to date so I suppose I will never get the service pack. It just does not make sense to me.

Hey!!!! I have Ultimate and I like it. But, where are the EXCLUSIVES and the EXTRAS?

Will they be shipped with Windows 7? Will I have to pay another $200+ next year for Windows 7 "Ultimate"?

It is not fair, really.

Besides, SP1 now make my PC freeze when I change the video card settings. And that did not happen before.

:(

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

bham4ever, you should be able to uninstall the SP1 Beta by doing the following:

1. Go to Control Panel.

2. Under "Programs" choose "Uninstall a program".

3. In the left-hand sidebar there should be an option for "Installed Updates". Click it.

4. SP1 should be listed there, just right-click on it and uninstall.

That should work.

Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Brandon -

What's the real deal with the SigmaTel Drivers?

I'm really tired of waiting.

Telling us that the updated drivers will be out eventually is not comforting. I waited over a year for SP1 ... that was eventually. Now I have to wait ... eventually ... for updated drivers so I can install, what will be when occurs, an out of date update? Yes. It's just that crazy.

Also hearing that Windows 7 is built on Vista doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy either.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) als automatisches Update

Hello Mr. Flores,

I'd just like to say I think Microsoft and its Windows Vista team should be nothing short of ashamed for having released such a dysfunctional, problem-ridden OS. I'm lucky if I can get my brand new Dell laptop to shut down, and when it does, nine times out of 10, I get an error message upon rebooting.

Now, making matters worse, we learn that delivery of Vista SP1, promised for weeks in mid-April to Windows Automative Update users, may be postponed several more weeks for most users, and that when it finally is installed, it may not work anyway because of hardware incompatibility issues.

Is this some sort of joke? In traditional business models, there is a phase called "testing" that comes into play somewhere between "development" and "making cash hand over fist". There's also the concept of developing trusting relationships with clients by delivering on promises. I respectfully and sincerely hope this Windows Vista spectacle will inspire serious reflection and organizational change within Microsoft.

Posted by BobWells

The entire Windows team seems completely dysfunctional at the moment. Service packs that are late, bug-ridden, only work in some languages, and don't work with computers bearing Vista compatible. The lack of any meaningful extras is also bordering on fraud. It's a continual game of wait, disappointment, wait, disappointment.

Never in the history of Microsoft have I witnessed such disregard for customers. I thought they would have cleaned this processs up a few months ago, but I see nothing changes at Microsoft. No customer is too good to change process that clearly doesn't work.

Using Google, If you type in:

"I hate Mac" you get 755000 hits

"I hate Vista" you get 760000 hits

"I hate Osx" you get 579000 hits

"I hate xp" 305000

There is way too much hate.

Some Xp headlines were" my cdrom doesn't work, my nic card won't work, etc. Is this XP or Vista. XP pryer to SP1 and Sp2 had driver problems.

Every operating system has problems. Every card manufacture comes up with some weird driver. As os's upgrade will require system upgrades. I tried to load Windows 95 on an old hard drive for kick's and  to see how it compaired to XP and VISTA. Guess what I can't get drivers for my video etc for 95.

If your spending the money for Vista upgrade you can't have both. I had to buy a lot of "new stuff" for XP to function well.

If you hate Vista buy something else to hate.

Lighten up

-unable to shutdown properly

-unable to restart/startup

-restart taking an unusually long time

-fix startup option freezing

-failure to awake from sleep

Please advise.

Chris,

What's the deal with the SigmaTel drivers?

It's insulting to continually see new posts by the windows team while so many, many issues are still being unresolved. What's going on at Microsoft? Is it a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off over there or what?

Chris, This whole (un)service pack is in an abyssmal state of affairs at the moment, and you're in charge. FIX IT NOW or get the hell out of the way.

It's been well over an $#%##%$ing YEAR now. The RTM build of the service pack was finished LAST YEAR. We still have no information. I couldn't give a crap about SP1. I just want my computer to work and play sound - something I was able to do with a mockingboard on my Apple II plus 30 years ago. I do not feel I am out of line or that this is too much to ask for a "Vista Capable" stickered laptop. You can spin Vista however you want, but this whole "wow" experience is just a big turd.

Origami announcements? Glad Microsoft devoted their resources to getting THAT project done when there are still major gaping problems with their other product line. Yes, it is insulting when I see that people have been begging for answers for months with no real indication of any progression.

These forums are worthless.

Regarding Sigma Tel, it is interesting to note that the Sigma Tel folks posted on their website that their drivers work fine with SP1. They suggested uninstalling the drivers, installing SP1 and reinstalling the drivers afterwards. Works in theory excpet Plug & Play gets in the way of that.

My point though is just how closely is Microsoft working with Sigma Tel if Microsoft says there's a problem and Sigma Tel says there's not?

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

StephenReynolds, not sure which service pack you are talking about but Windows Vista SP1 RTM'd *this year*. February to be exact. Over 2 months ago. Read our SP1 RTM announcement we posted:

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/02/04/announcing-the-rtm-of-windows-vista-sp1.aspx

So no - it hasn't been well over a year and no Windows Vista SP1 was not finished "last year".

Also: the Origami software is a group of folks who have nothing to do with the work being done on any service pack for Windows. The work that was done on SP1 and continuing to be done on support for SP1 has absolutely nothing to do with the Origami Experience software nor is Microsoft diverting resources in any way.

And these are not forums. This is a blog.

We will continue to post content on this site and when we have answers to give we will give them here or in future blog posts.

Thanks,

Brandon

This is pure BS. I *NEED* to install SP1 due tho the basic failures in Vista. I had asked you for a status report about SigmaTel, not a canned copy n' paste response.

Perhaps the tech MEDIA need to know what is going on here and I intend to do just that!

:0((

Posted by StephenReynolds

-So no - it hasn't been well over a year and no Windows Vista SP1 was not finished "last year".-

Brandon, what are you talking about? Vista was released at the beginning of 2007. That's 16 months. The RTM is the SAME build number as the RC code which was finished late last year on Dec 12, 2007. That's it. That's the EXACT SAME CODE that the RTM is now. Nothing has changed, so it's been almost 5 months since both the RC and RTM code is the same.

Whatever the case...even if you want to spin this as final on Feb 4th, then it's been almost 2 months with no updates other than the tiresome "we're working with our partners..." which could be another 5 years from now for all we know from your verbose responses.

-Also: the Origami software is a group of folks who have nothing to do with the work being done on any service pack for Windows-

Yep. That's EXACTLY my point.

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

StephenReynolds, what are you talking about? To quote you here you said "The RTM build of the service pack was finished LAST YEAR" and this is not correct. SP1 for Windows Vista RTM'd in February - over 2 months ago this year. It didn't look like you were talking about Vista's RTM to me (which occured at the end of 2007) especially when you say "service pack". I'm not "spinning" anything. I responded to what you wrote.

I apologize if I may have misunderstood.

And in regards to "your point" about the Origami Experience - content for the blog will come from different areas from the Windows Team (or even other teams & companies that make cool apps for Windows) not just those who work on service packs for Windows here at Microsoft. Not sure I see your point really. We're certainly not going to make every blog post about SP1. When we have info to share on SP1 we will write another blog post relaying that information or leave comments just as I am doing here.

Compumind, I apologize you find my response "BS" unfortunately all I can say is that Microsoft is indeed continuing to work with partners to provide updated drivers that will help us remove the blocks in place for the problematic drivers preventing SP1 from installing on some PCs. I have not been given anything anymore specific to relay to you at this time. You asked for a update and I gave you a update. I apologize I don't have specifics yet. Threatening me by going to the "tech media" isn't going to make me give you anything more specific because as I said - I don't have anything more specific to give.

I understand folks (especially with SigmaTel drivers) want answers and when I have answers to give I will give them. I appreciate the comments and feedback folks are leaving here and continue to relay them internally to the folks who might be able to give me the answers you need and want.

But I also need to remind everyone that we need to keep comments here constructive and respectful. If these comments begin to turn unconstructive and disrespectful toward myself or anyone else I will have to disable comments on this post.

I am hoping to have answers to share with you in the very near future.

Thanks,

Brandon

Posted by Compumind

Hello Brandon -

Nothing that I had mentioned should be construed as either unconstructive and/or disrespectful.

However...

I am just truly *AMAZED* that Vista SP1 could even be released, with Microsoft knowing that the SigmaTel (driver) user base is vast.

To me this is BS and I stand by this comment.

It should not be that difficult for both the driver vendor and your company to get this problem totally resolved.

At the very least, kindly provide an ETA for resolution, so people, like myself, can plan  alternative measures.

As for the Tech Media, it is already known that there are several Vista SP1 install problems.

I added my feelings to the Blogosphere and feel that everyone affected should do the same.

Thank you.

Hmmmm... IDT, successor to SigmaTel, has workaround instruction for this issue posted on their Web site. The words they use indicate that this is not their problem, that their drivers work correctly, and they have no responsibility for this issue.

Looks like a stalemate to me, so I guess that, unless I am willing to risk taking the manual steps necessary, I'll never receive Vista SP1.

Just an FYI,

For fun I downloaded and installed the Windows 2008 server trial version.

Wow. What a difference. Time to logon screen is 30 seconds or less and a fully usable desktop in less than 60 seconds. SigmaTel sound worked right out of the box and continued to work after the updates. Mouse, and wireless all work with not a single issue. Copying 5 MB of files from my usb key was so fast I never even saw a progress bar - just flashed onto my desktop. Not a single blue screen or crash.

Honestly...this is the desktop we've all been asking for and addressed all of my Vista HW/performance issues I've been having. Kudos to the server team. You really knocked the ball out of the park with Server 2008. I have no idea what the problem is with Vista, but Server 2008 does indeed show that the same core services of the new Vista model really do work very well when applied correctly.

Happy Snoopy Dance at last!

:)

Hi all:

I find it interesting that IDT (SigmaTel) has a possible fix on their web site for SP1!

One would think that they would communicate with Microsoft and have them post it *FIRST*, but this is not the case.

What about the average user?

Microsoft needs to have this done via Windows Update, completely without user intervention.

Ceinach, your observation with Windows Server 2008 is interesting, but it is not practical or warranted for the desktop/laptop, which should be running Vista Client.

Brandon/Chris, what are your thoughts?

Is the MS validated fix near?

Posted by Brandon LeBlanc

Compumind, what IDT has posted on their site in regards to possible resolutions to installing Windows Vista SP1 with the current SigmaTel drivers does indeed work - we understand its of course not the best resolution for the average consumer. I have been told by our folks here at Microsoft that they continue to work with our partners in providing updated drivers for Windows Update for all problematic drivers.

I am hoping to have something more to say very soon so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Kingsize,

Many EULA contain parts that nobody would agree to unless forced to because they are so one sided.  These terms are pretty unconscionable, in which case those specific parts of the EULA may not be completely legal in some countries.

However if you don't like Microsoft updating your machine, then you can always disable automatic updates.

Microsoft isnt the only company that occassionally has EULA issue, Apple does to:

I'ld try not to get to worked up about an EULA, does anyone read them anyway... probably only IT admins!

Hello everyone, I have some IDT/SigmaTel information to share which is also being posted on the TechNet forums here:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3319795&SiteID=17

Last week we updated KB948343 to reflect some changes we’ve made to the IDT/SigmaTel filters that block Windows Vista SP1 from being available to folks running some versions of IDT/SigmaTel drivers we’ve flagged as problematic:

IDT/SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Sthda.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Sthda64.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

IDT/SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Stwrt.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

Exceptions for IDT/SigmaTel drivers were made on certain models of Dell, HP, and Sony computers because these drivers were updated to address this issue before the 12/17/07 publish date.

If the Sthda*.cat or Stwrt*.cat files exist on your PC AND have a modified date of 12/17/07 – the Windows Vista SP1 block filter is not applied and Windows Vista SP1 should be offered to you via Windows Update.

If no *.cat files exist we look at specific versions (mainly on OEM PCs such as Dell, HP, and Sony) that have the fix that was made prior to 12/17/07. If the driver does not have that fix, Windows Update will not offer Windows Vista SP1 to you.

At the end of this week, Windows Update will begin providing updated drivers for some OEM PCs running IDT/SigmaTel drivers. Those who receive these updated drivers will no longer be blocked by Windows Update from seeing and installing Windows Vista SP1.

Those who do not receive these updated drivers on Windows Update and remain blocked from installing Windows Vista SP1 need not to worry – we continue to work with OEMs in providing updated IDT/SigmaTel drivers to Windows Update.

Thanks,

Brandon

I have 4 STWRT files but none with the modified date of 12/17/07.

I don't know if they will block SP1,guess I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for the info Brandon.   Ann

Brandon,

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on the

progress on the SigmaTel/IDT sound drivers,

it's very appreciated!

I just updated my x64 Vista Ultimate box

from Windows Update and the drivers are

working fine.

However I am not yet seeing SP1 available for

my system, even after a reboot.  I checked all

the other drivers in the KB948343 but do not

see any other impediments here.  Is there a

delay in the filters themselves being updated

after the driver was made available?

Thanks

Can someone please help???

I tried installing Vista Service pack 1 today, and when it installed section 1 of 3, it shut down. When i restart it, it says that there may have been a hardware/software problem. I tried to start it up, and it auto-shuts down after the Loading bar for Vista comes up. I have tried to run it in safe mode and it will not load the OS. HELP!! (please?!?!)

My Comment is stupid, really. It isn't about SP1, just Windows Vista only, I just don't know where to find it; I write here, hope people will help!

It's about font smoothing in Windows Vista, what happen to it? Font Smoothing only improves text at higher size, but bad at smaller size; Font Smoothing with ClearType worse, improves text at smaller size BUT it didn't smooth at higher size. The easiest way to check is zoom web page in IE. This also has in Windows XP and also in Windows Vista it wasn't improved. Except in Office's applications like Word, Font at higher size is smoothed, beautifully. Also if you try to view OpenType (.OTF) Font File, it is smoothed to... But when view TrueType (.TTF) Font File (In Both 2 TrueType and OpenType Outlines), it isn't smoothed... Can someone explain me why? Will it be fixed in Windows 7??
